Ideas for a Wrexham Velo Park
The Wrexham Velo Park is an exciting proposal to create a new, purpose-built home for cycling and wheeled sports on the former golf course site within Alyn Waters Country Park, Wrexham. It aims to provide a safe, traffic-free circuit for training, coaching and competition, alongside family-friendly spaces and off-road trails. The project will support healthier lifestyles, new opportunities for young people, and wider benefits for tourism, events and Wrexham’s vision as a sporting and playful city.
This project is currently at an early feasibility stage, and this engagement is not a consultation on a planning application. The purpose is to test the idea, explore options and understand local views. If the proposal is shown to be viable and has broad community support, a planning application could be submitted at a later stage. As owners of Alyn Waters Country Park, Wrexham County Borough Council will review the full feasibility work before making any decisions about whether the proposals should progress.
Wrexham Cycling Club – established in 1937 – is leading this early concept stage and is keen that your ideas help shape the design as plans develop, ensuring any future facility is created for the whole community.
The Facilities
The proposed Wrexham Velo Park would provide a safe, traffic-free place for cycling and a wide range of non-motorised wheeled sports. At its heart is a 1.6km closed-road circuit, fully fenced for safety and designed for training, coaching, competition and recreation. A series of cross-overs would allow the track to be divided into smaller loops so multiple groups—children, beginners, clubs, schools or para-sport users—can train at the same time.
The site would have gated access, parking for around 80 vehicles, and secure storage using adapted shipping containers, with the potential for toilets and a small “meanwhile” café as the project develops.
Alongside the main circuit, an off-road area would make use of the site’s existing slopes to provide a cyclo-cross and mountain-bike skills space, offering exciting riding for all abilities. Overspill parking and improved paths for spectators and visitors would complete a flexible, community-focused facility.
The Site
Following a review of several potential locations across Wrexham, the former Fore Golf Course within Alyn Waters Country Park was identified as the most viable site.
The land is owned by Wrexham County Borough Council, is already associated with recreation, and benefits from existing access roads, parking areas and nearby facilities. Its location offers excellent accessibility by car, bus, walking and cycling, while also providing a setting that feels connected to nature.
Reusing the land positively also brings the chance to repurpose a previously abandoned area and remodel artificial mounds to improve the landscape. The site’s varied terrain creates opportunities for an engaging circuit design and supports the inclusion of off-road trails.
Importantly, the project would allow for ecological enhancement, new planting and better drainage, helping to restore and enrich the environment. Existing footpaths and rights of way would be protected and improved, ensuring the Country Park remains open and welcoming for everyone.
Have Your Say
We are at an early conceptual stage and want to hear your views. Your feedback will help shape how the project evolves before any detailed plans are drawn up.
Over the coming months, technical assessments, environmental studies and discussions with partners will continue. Your input will form an important part of this process.
