What is this project about?
Wales has an ambition to become the UK’s leading cycling tourism destination. We have an exciting period for cycling tourism ahead, as we build towards the Wales stage of the Tour de France in July 2027. We must ensure that we harness this opportunity to create a lasting legacy that benefits visitors, communities and businesses in Wales. On behalf of Welsh Government/Visit Wales, this project is mapping Wales’ existing and planned cycling routes, infrastructure, services and experiences to help shape future investment, marketing and the development of cycling destination hubs across the country.
Owen Davies Consulting with Anian Ltd have been appointed to lead the work and we are particularly interested in understanding how local and regional cycling priorities connect with — or could support — visitor and tourism-focused cycling experiences for Wales.
Who is this for?
This platform is for stakeholders involved in, or with knowledge of:
- Cycling infrastructure planning and delivery
- Tourism development and destination management
- Cycling, outdoor and active travel organisations
- Accommodation, attractions and visitor services
- Events, trails, routes or cycling-related facilities.
This includes Local Authorities, National Park Authorities, DMOs, Welsh Government partners, cycling bodies, tourism businesses and community organisations.
How you can help
Your local knowledge is vital. We are asking stakeholders to help us:
- Identify existing or planned cycling investment at local or regional level
- Highlight where cycling infrastructure supports (or could support) tourism and visitor experiences
- Identify any hidden gems such as cycling café’s, accommodation and retail
- Flag gaps, constraints, opportunities or emerging ideas.
Thank you for contributing to the survey and interactive map. Both are now closed for analysis. If you have any additional information you would like to share, please contact the study team at owen@owendaviesconsulting.co.uk.
What happens next?
All information will feed into a national cycling tourism product map for Wales. This will help:
- Inform future investment and prioritisation
- Support the development of cycling destination hubs, trails and experiences
- Shape marketing and digital tools on VisitWales.com
Thank you for contributing your knowledge and helping shape the future of cycling tourism in Wales.
